NZPPS Research Scholarship
A primary objective of The NZ Plant Protection Society is to pool and exchange information on the biology of weeds, invertebrate and vertebrate pests, pathogens and beneficial organisms, and methods for modifying their effects. As part of this objective, the Society has established a trust fund to support the NZPPS Research Scholarship. This Scholarship is to encourage research in relevant disciplines (entomology, plant pathology, weed science, zoology, ecology, and plant protection sciences), on topics relating to control of pests, pathogens and/or weeds in primary production (pastoral and arable agriculture, horticulture, forestry), or the natural or human environments.
One Research Scholarship of up to $3000 will be awarded each year. Scholarship applications from students registered at a New Zealand university or other recognised New Zealand tertiary institutions will be considered. The application must include:
- a statement describing the proposed research and the applicant's perceptions of the importance and relevance of the project,
- a supporting statement from the applicant's supervisor/mentor, and
- a copy of the applicant's academic record.

Dan Watkins Scholarship in Weed Science
Dan Watkins was a leading figure in early weed science research in New Zealand. He was a founder of the New Zealand Weeds Conference (forerunner of the New Zealand Plant Protection Society), a member of the New Zealand National Research Council, and was involved with other scientific bodies. This scholarship has been set up in memory of Dan Watkins and to recognise his contribution to weed science in New Zealand. The New Zealand Plant Protection Society administers this scholarship, which aims to encourage research into the biology and control of weeds in New Zealand.
Scholarship applications from students at a New Zealand university or students registered in other recognised New Zealand tertiary institutions will be considered.
The Scholarship is a prestigious award made on a competitive basis, usually each year. In making awards, consideration will be given to the appropriateness and relevance of the proposed research, academic record of the applicant(s), and supporting statements from supervisors, peers or sponsors. The monetary value of the Scholarship will usually be $5000. Recipients will be encouraged to become members of the Society and present a paper about their research to one of the Society's conferences.
Applications should be made on the application form available below or from the secretary. The application must include:
- a statement describing the proposed research and the applicant's perceptions of the importance and relevance of the project,
- a supporting statement from the applicant's supervisor/mentor, and
- a copy of the applicant's academic record.
Applications must be recieved by 1 October each year.

NZPPS Conference Travel Grant for Students
The NZ Plant Protection Society may, from time to time, make monetary grants to students to assist them to attend and present papers at the annual NZ Plant Protection Conference. Grants may be awarded, on a competitive basis, to individual students from whom research papers have been accepted for presentation at the Conference. Other grants may be awarded to groups of students travelling together to encourage greater attendance at, and participation in, the Conference by students with an interest in a career in plant protection.
Applications for this grant should be made to the Secretary of the Society, by 15 May in the year of the Conference (which is held each August). Applications by individual students must contain a copy of the applicant's academic record, and a brief supporting statement from the applicant's supervisor. Applications by student groups must be made by a member of the Society from the teaching staff who will supervise the group's attendance at the Conference. A brief outline of why each member of a group should be financially supported by the Society must be provided.
