Surveillance for Biosecurity: Pre-Border to Pest Management
New Zealand’s distance from other land masses and its relatively recent human occupation explain why some of the worst pests and diseases that afflict agriculture and the natural environment elsewhere have not reached our shores. Our biosecurity system, the envy of many other countries, aims to keep it that way. To do that, national biosecurity relies on surveillance – watching for routes by which foreign organisms might get here, looking for new incursions early so that they can be stopped, and using surveillance to detect and stop pests spreading into new areas. The papers presented at the symposium on Surveillance for Biosecurity are now made available here. They represent current New Zealand thinking on how best to find new invasion routes and pests early enough to interrupt the seemingly inexorable spread of invasive pests and diseases to all corners of the globe.

Future Challenges in Crop Protection: Repositioning New Zealand's Primary Industries for the Future
New Zealand is renowned for its innovative primary production practices and high quality produce. Integrated fruit and wine production are the mainstays of horticultural export while intensive pastoral production, in an environment free of international animal diseases of concern, is the basis of that sector. All sectors are striving for production best practice that has minimal environmental impact, maximises food safety and minimises inputs. Unfortunately New Zealand is not a low cost producer. Land and labour costs are high, therefore 'produce NZ' must be targeted at high value markets. Increasingly producers are being subjected to demands from buyers that add significant compliance costs for no increased financial return. They also face restrictions on production practices by people half a world away with no understanding (or desire to understand) the unique production environment in New Zealand. Their concerns, concealed in phrases such as 'consumer demands', are purely to maximise their market share. This publication contains 15 papers presented at the 2007 New Zealand Plant Protection Society Symposium entitled "Future Challenges in Crop Protection: Repositioning New Zealand's Primary Industries for the Future". It was a successful attempt to raise the awareness of researchers and regulators to pressures on producers and to identify synergies for research and regulation to minimise compliance. It is not meant to be the final say on the subject but a thought provoking component to what has been an ongoing process of 'moving goal posts'. The future of New Zealand’s primary production industries lies with how these pressures are addressed today.

Plant Protection in Organic Arable and Vegetable Crops
Developed to address a perceived lack of information on pest, disease and weed management in organic farming in New Zealand, this new book is an invaluable resource for organic arable and vegetable growers and their consultants, as well as for those considering a move to reduced chemical usage or organics. Beginning with the central principles of soil health and the management of pests, disease and weeds in organic growing, the book also contains standalone chapters on those pest, disease and weed problems specific to eight arable crop (barley, borage, clover seed, lentils, grass seed, linseed, maize and wheat) and nine vegetable crops (asparagus, brassicas, capsicums, carrots, onions, process peas, potatoes, squash and tomatoes), together with information on recommended organic control methods. Throughout, anecdotal material has been deliberately avoided – instead draft chapters of the book were circulated among scientists, growers and consultants for practical, objective feedback and sound evidence to incorporate into the final text. Wherever possible, information has been related to New Zealand conditions and to current organic certification standards.

Pesticide Resistance: Prevention and Management Strategies 2005
The issue of resistance of pests, including plant pathogenic fungi and bacteria, insects, mites, nematodes and weeds, to pesticides is very relevant to sustainable agriculture and horticulture. The New Zealand Plant Protection Society has been proactive in documenting and highlighting pesticide resistance for many years. Society members have developed strategies that have been ratified by industry for a range of horticultural, arable and pastoral crops and their pests. This book provides a permanent record of all the current strategies and will give farmers, growers and consultants the opportunity to have the information on hand for quick reference during daily activities.

Managing Wilding Conifers in New Zealand: Present and Future
There is growing recognition that wilding conifers have the potential to change our landscape and adversely affect land-use value. This volume considers the economic and environmental importance of wilding conifers in New Zealand, whether current control strategies and methods are adequate to manage the spread of wilding trees, and whether biological control is a feasible option given the risk of vectoring diseases such as pine pitch canker.

An Illustrated Guide to Common Weeds of New Zealand, 2nd Edition
A popular and indispensable tool in the identification and management of weeds in New Zealand, now in its second edition. Colour photographs and simple text aid in identification. Plants are listed by both botanical and common names, and indexes enable easy searching. The usefulness and toxicity of plants are also addressed. This expanded edition contains many new and clearer photographs and several species which didn't feature in the first edition, including all the woody ferns and some additional trees, such as Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). The text has also been modified to accommodate recent changes to the legislation governing pest plants.

Defending the Green Oasis: New Zealand Biosecurity and Science
Biosecurity is vitally important to New Zealand. For reasons related to a lengthy period of geographical isolation, this country's production and indigenous ecosystems are uniquely susceptible to invasion by highly destructive exotic species. The green oasis of New Zealand must be defended by optimal use of the financial and scientific resources available. Top New Zealand Government officials, leading industry representatives and key scientists have contributed to this book. Perspectives are given by those operating the biosecurity systems and administering biosecurity research funding. The contributions from scientists explain what new technology is available to enhance biosecurity, and producers emphasise the importance of biosecurity to their industry.
